Isle Of Wight, 1973
In May 1973, on the Isle of Wight near Sandown, a young boy known as "Fay" and a friend encountered something utterly bizarre while walking near a golf course. After hearing a strange wailing siren, they crossed a small wooden bridge and came upon a large, clown-like figure standing in a field. The being was nearly seven feet tall, with pale skin, large triangular eyes, and red markings across its face. It wore a tunic, gloves, and a tall hat — all mismatched in shape and color — and its speech was robotic and hesitant. The figure introduced itself as "Sam," claiming not to be human and stating it had no name in the way humans understand names.
The children spent around half an hour with this figure, even entering its strange, windowless hut which contained crude, mechanical furnishings. It offered them a drink of safe (but foul-tasting) water from a hose and spoke in riddles about its origins. Fay later reported the event to her father, a local UFO investigator, who documented the entire account. What makes the Sandown Clown Incident so unnerving is not only the surreal appearance of the figure, but the prolonged and almost casual nature of the encounter — and the absence of any clear explanation or follow-up sightings.
